In a move that’s sure to spark debate, the Trump administration has announced the immediate withdrawal of 700 federal immigration officers from Minnesota. Vice President JD Vance countered that the departing officers were primarily in Minneapolis to protect those conducting arrests, insisting, “We’re not drawing down the immigration enforcement.” This back-and-forth highlights the deep divisions over the operation’s purpose and impact.
Homan, who took over the Minnesota operation in late January after the second fatal shooting, has pushed for greater cooperation from local jails, arguing that transferring inmates to ICE custody is safer and reduces the need for officers on the streets. He hailed the recent “unprecedented collaboration” as a success, but critics remain skeptical. Minnesota officials claim their state prisons and most county sheriffs already work with immigration authorities, though key jails in Minneapolis and St. Paul have faced scrutiny for not fully meeting ICE’s cooperation standards.
And this is where it gets even more contentious: Homan declared the operation a success, citing the removal of individuals wanted for violent crimes. Yet, he admitted it wasn’t “perfect,” and schools in Minnesota have filed a lawsuit to block enforcement actions near campuses, arguing they disrupt classes and endanger students. Homeland Security responded by stating, “ICE is not going to schools to arrest children—we are protecting children.”
