The Tampa Bay Rays' seemingly never-ending quest for a new home field just took another turn, and this time, it involves a local college. But will this attempt be any different from the rest?
The Hillsborough College board of trustees has unanimously approved a non-binding memorandum of understanding with the Tampa Bay Rays. This agreement signals a potential redevelopment of the college's Dale Mabry campus, with the centerpiece being a brand-new baseball stadium. Think of it as the very first, tentative step in a long and complex dance.
According to Rays CEO Ken Babby, this is an "encouraging" initial step. The proposed project envisions more than just a stadium. It's aiming to create a mixed-use district in Tampa, strategically located near Steinbrenner Field – the spring training home of the New York Yankees (which the Rays used temporarily last season) – and Raymond James Stadium, where the Tampa Bay Buccaneers dominate on Sundays. Imagine a vibrant area bustling with activity, anchored by baseball and fueled by community engagement.
But here's where it gets controversial... This isn't the first time the Rays have pursued a shiny, new ballpark. In fact, their history is littered with abandoned stadium proposals. Just last March, the team backed out of a massive $1.3 billion project to build a stadium next to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. The reasons cited were a combination of hurricane-related setbacks and escalating costs that made the project financially unviable. This left many fans feeling frustrated and skeptical about the team's long-term commitment to the area.
And this is the part most people miss... The ownership of the Rays also underwent a significant change recently. In late September, the team was sold from a group led by Stuart Sternberg, who had been at the helm since 2005, to a new group headed by Florida-based real estate developer Patrick Zalupski. A change in ownership can often lead to shifts in priorities and strategies, so this new deal might just be what the Rays need to finally get a new stadium.
Let's not forget the ghosts of stadium proposals past. Under Sternberg's leadership, the Rays also announced plans for, and then ultimately abandoned, proposed ballparks at the Al Lang Stadium site in St. Petersburg (back in 2007), Ybor City in Tampa (in 2018), and, of course, the aforementioned site next to Tropicana Field in downtown St. Petersburg (in 2023). Some might argue that this track record makes any new proposal inherently suspect.
For the upcoming season, the Rays are planning to return to Tropicana Field after some necessary repairs. Their lease agreement with the city of St. Petersburg mandates that they play at the Trop for three more seasons. This means that any new stadium project is still years away from becoming a reality.
