The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is considering a controversial move to shift the timing of future Winter Olympics due to the impacts of climate change. 'Perhaps we are discussing bringing the Winter Olympics a little earlier,' said Karl Stoss, the IOC member overseeing the sports program review. 'To do it in January, as it affects the Paralympics as well.'
Since the 1964 Innsbruck Olympics, every Winter Games medal has been won in February. However, moving to January could disrupt the scheduling of World Cup races and events, as well as directly clash with NFL and NBA schedules. The IOC is reviewing these issues in the first year of Kirsty Coventry's presidency, and changing the winter edition dates is an option.
The Milan Cortina Paralympic Winter Games will be held in March, but the potential shift to January could impact the timing of future events. 'March is very late because the sun is strong enough to melt the snow,' said Stoss, whose home country, Austria, is a traditional power in Alpine skiing and ski jumping. The IOC will meet again in June to make decisions about the Olympic reviews and whether to add new sports and events to the 2030 French Alps Winter Games.
'Maybe the Paralympics will be in February and the other edition will be in January. That would also be a part of our discussion,' Stoss added. This move could spark debate and differing opinions, as it may impact the scheduling of other major sporting events. What do you think? Would you agree or disagree with this potential change?
