Laneway Festival Perth Review 2026: Chappell Roan's Captivating Performance and Fantasy-Inspired Production
Chappell Roan's Magical Performance at Laneway Festival
Chappell Roan's medieval fairytale vision came to life on stage at Laneway Festival on Sunday, captivating thousands of fans with her camp, feminine energy and pop hits. The 27-year-old, born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, looked flawless in a pirate-like red and black Elizabethan outfit with a modern twist, her voluminous curly red hair flowing behind her as she launched into her songs.
The suspense in the air was electric as all eyes focused on the giant gothic castle set on stage. After some flashing green lights and smoke, the decorated pop star emerged to a screaming crowd. Her makeup looked impeccable, and she sparkled under the stage lights thanks to her golden eyeshadow, glowing cheek highlighter and perfectly lined maroon lips.
From dancing on the stage to ascending the stairs onto the castle bridge, she brought the party vibes. She jammed alongside her all-female band members who also wore eccentric outfits on theme with Roan's drag-queen influenced style.
Roan's performance was full of theatrics and nods to classic fantasy tales with circling dragons and dancing goblin visuals. During Hot To Go, she pulled out fiery pyrotechnics as the entire mass of fans did the signature letter dance moves (think YMCA) to the catchy track.
Despite some fans citing audio issues, Roan's act blew festivalgoers away with the extent of creativity and just pure good vibes playing out on the stage. Her set was a testament to her success, with the impressive stage design and screen graphics enhancing her performance.
Controversy and Counterpoints
Roan also took a moment to thank all of her crew who helped her achieve success during the gruelling festival circuit. She admitted, 'It’s a really hard festival run for so many reasons.' This statement highlights the challenges artists face in the festival circuit, inviting discussion on the demands and pressures of touring.
Surprise Guest: Robert Irwin
The rest of Laneway also oozed talent with one very special Australian icon taking the stage to surprise the crowd. Robert Irwin was revealed as American singer Role Model’s surprise ‘Sally’, much to the excitement of fans who kept their fingers crossed for the whole day hoping it would be him.
PinkPantheress' Viral Hits
The British singer and producer performed an early evening set full of her most viral hits. Some fans even called for her to be moved to the main stage after drawing in a huge crowd that spilled out of the designated stage area.
Wet Leg's Indie Rock Vibe
Fellow Brits Wet Leg, led by Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, changed up the energy with their indie rock vibe and unique look. Teasdale rocked out to fans on a lime green guitar wearing a white top and gold hotpants with her untamed pink and green wet hair dripping down her back.
Wolf Alice's Captivating Performance
Another British band got fans primed for Chappell Roan with lead singer Ellie Rowsell’s powerful angelic vocals captivating the crowd. Belting out tunes like Bloom Baby Bloom and Don’t Delete the Kisses in a white outfit embellished with blue stars, Rowsell had the audience under her rock spell.
