Aberdeen Airport Flights Cancelled Due to Heavy Snow - Winter Chaos in Scotland (2026)

Imagine waking up to a winter wonderland, only to find out your travel plans are completely upended. That’s exactly what happened to passengers at Aberdeen Airport, where heavy snowfall turned a routine day into a logistical nightmare. But here’s where it gets even more frustrating: flights were not just delayed—they were outright cancelled, leaving travelers stranded and airlines scrambling to manage the chaos.

British Airways, in a statement on their website (https://www.britishairways.com/travel/flightstatus/public/en_gb/results/loaded?searchMethod=route&date=2026-01-04&isDepartures=true&location0=LHR&location0Name=London%20Heathrow&location0Type=airport&location1=ABZ&location1Name=Aberdeen&location1Type=airport), apologized for the disruption, noting, “We’re very sorry, this flight scheduled from London to Aberdeen has been diverted to Edinburgh.” The flight, originally set to land in Aberdeen at 8:10 am, didn’t arrive until 11:38 am—a delay of over three hours. It had to take off from Edinburgh at 10:30 am, adding an unexpected detour to the journey.

The ripple effect was immediate. The corresponding Aberdeen to Heathrow flight, slated for a 9:00 am departure, didn’t leave until 1:20 pm. And this is the part most people miss: it wasn’t just one or two flights affected—all subsequent flights to Heathrow, scheduled for 1:30 pm, 5:15 pm, 7:00 pm, and 8:25 pm, were cancelled. Loganair and KLM services also faced the axe, as did arrivals from Heathrow scheduled for 4:05 pm, 7:35 pm, and 10:35 pm.

Aberdeen Airport took to X (https://x.com/ABZ_Airport) to urge passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport. They also acknowledged the tireless efforts of their staff, who have been working around the clock to clear snow and maintain safety. “Thank you to the staff who have been working tirelessly on snow clearing these last few days,” the airport wrote.

The cancellations come amid an amber weather warning for north and northeast Scotland, where heavy and persistent snow is expected to create hazardous conditions. The Met Office has issued a warning for Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray, Angus, Highland, Orkney (https://www.heraldscotland.com/local-news/orkney-news/?ref=au), and Shetland (https://www.heraldscotland.com/local-news/shetland-news/?ref=au), effective from 6 pm on Sunday to 10 am on Monday.

Assistant Chief Constable Alan Waddell of Police Scotland (https://www.heraldscotland.com/topics/police-scotland/) advised, “Heavy snow showers and ice mean driving conditions are likely to be hazardous in some areas. Our advice is to plan ahead and consider if your journey is really necessary during the weather warnings.”

But here’s the controversial question: Are airports and airlines doing enough to prepare for such weather disruptions? While snow is a natural phenomenon, the scale of cancellations raises concerns about contingency planning. Should more resources be allocated to snow clearing and passenger communication? Or is this simply an unavoidable consequence of extreme weather?

What do you think? Let us know in the comments—do you believe airports and airlines could handle these situations better, or is this just the reality of winter travel?
